An Honest Review of Nathan James Furniture

However, Nathan James is one of the first online companies I’ve found success with. I purchased my new coffee table from them, as well as two beautiful rattan patio chairs (which, PSA, are 49% off right now and about to sell out). I just had to share!

What is Nathan James?

The brand is known for selling pieces that emulate popular brands like West Elm and Crate & Barrel, but at a fraction of the cost. Their pieces are also supposed to be relatively easy to assemble and don’t come with hundreds of pieces and tools.

Brooke Burdon started the company after she had enough of pinching pennies just to snag one piece of nice furniture and then having several meltdowns while trying to assemble it correctly. Been there, done that. All of this inspired Burdon to start her own company that wouldn’t send people into debt or take hours to put together.

Now, Nathan James has become a one-stop-shop for furnishing your home. Burdon’s main aspects for finding and creating the right furniture are style, assembly, and quality — three things she wasn’t going to sacrifice, and doesn’t want others to have to sacrifice either. And so far I find that to be true.

Budget is one of the main things to consider when shopping for furniture. Nathan James furniture prices fall close to many other brands that are selling directly to consumers. You can find nightstands and light fixtures as low as $100, bookshelves anywhere from $150 to $700, and dressers ranging from $300 to $800. Meanwhile, pieces like couches are going to cost upwards of $900. Plus, the brand has regular sales in addition to taking part in big sale days like Labor Day and Black Friday. You can always check out their Sales page too, which has prices marked as low as 80% off! While some pieces are still a bit higher in price than I prefer, I find the quality of the pieces and how easy they are to assemble make them well worth it.

Shipping, Deliveries & Where To Buy

While Nathan James doesn’t have any brick and mortar locations, I found buying from nathanjames.com super simple and straight forward. Not to mention they’re known for having great customer service! However, you can also shop from their partners like Amazon, Walmart, and Wayfair.

One thing I love about this brand is you get free shipping, and 100-day returns! This gives your mind some ease when hitting that “checkout” button knowing you can always send it back if it doesn’t work. Plus, there’s also an option for interest-free financing and Afterpay if you’re interested. When my orders came in, I was pleasantly surprised by how quick they arrived and how well they were packaged. According to the Nathan James website, most orders are processed and shipped within 24 hours. And since everything is shipped from a warehouse in Nevada, it only takes about 3-5 business days to receive your package if you live on the West Coast, and 8-11 business days if you’re on the East Coast. However, I got three packages shipped to Alabama within five days of ordering!

What I Got From Nathan James

As soon as my husband and I pulled the pieces out of the box and took them all out of their protective wrapping, we were surprised to see how much of the coffee table was already put together. Plus, the instructions included were actually short, simple, and made sense. They also included a QR code to watch digital instructions. Since we’re both visual learners, we loved that! As a girl who isn’t super handy on the construction side of things I was already feeling relieved.

Arguably the best part about the assembly for this coffee table was that is required no tools! While I ran out the door to run a quick errand I told my husband not to start without me. However, when I came back only 15 minutes later, the table was completely put together and he was already relaxing on the couch. His response?

“The instructions were super straightforward. And since it didn’t require tools I knew I could go ahead and put it together pretty easily. It only took me about 10 minutes.”

So, there ya have it. It only takes one person to put it together and if you’re pretty handy, it may only take 10 minutes. I asked how long he thinks it would take me to put it together by myself, an impatient builder who doesn’t like to follow instructions, and he said I could probably do it in the same amount of time.

The one issue we did notice was a very small scratch on the top of the table upon taking it out of the package that must have happened in the warehouse or during shipping. It’s pretty small and not super noticeable, but still something to be cautious about.

Again, we were happy to see how well-packaged and protected everything was in the box. Once we took everything out, we could tell these had a few more pieces to them and it was going to require a little more work.

We looked over the instructions and found the tools included in the box that were needed for assembly. And when I say “tools” I mean some washers, screws, and a small allen wrench. We followed the instructions step by step, and had both chairs put together in about 40 minutes. The website claims these take 50 minutes to assemble, but I think if you have two people, you can easily do it in less time.

After using the chairs for a little over a month during a rainy summer, they’ve held up super well and definitely upgraded the space of our carport-turned patio. We absolutely love them and get compliments on them every time someone comes over. Despite the outdoors being a messy place, we haven’t even had to wash the covers yet, which can easily just go in the washing machine.

Final Thoughts

So far, I’m loving these pieces from Nathan James, so does my husband, and pretty much everyone who comes over to our house. But as a woman who’s built some furniture by myself that left me in crying frustration, I think Nathan James is well worth it. You might find pieces that look similar, but cost double. Or, if you do find something with a lower price tag, chances are you’re sacrificing the quality, and your sanity when it takes three hours to assemble. I love how easy to understand the instructions are and how impressive the quality is. I give Nathan James a big stamp of approval and am already adding a few more pieces to my wishlist!
